HUST & CTU Launching a Model Farm to promote Sustainable Pangasius Supply Chain in Vietnam

On January 17th 2017, Hanoi University of Science and Technology (HUST) in collaboration with Can Tho University (CTU) held a ceremony to launch a Model Farm at Centre for Research and Development of Advanced Technical Application for Fisheries, CTU in the framework of a EU funded project “Establishing a Sustainable Pangasius Supply Chain in Vietnam” (SUPA).

Attending the ceremony were the Vice President of HUST – Prof. Tran Van Top, the Rector of CTU – Prof. Ha Thanh Toan; and representatives from the two University’s Departments and implementing partners of the project namely: Vietnam Cleaner Production Centre Ltd – Hanoi University of Technology (VNCPC), Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP) and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF).

The SUPA project is worth €2.4 million, of which the European Union finances €1.9 million under the EU SWITCH-Asia Programme. The project is implemented in Vietnam by VNCPC -HUST in partnership with VASEP, WWF-Vietnam and WWF- Austria, running from 2013 to 2017 with the objective of improving competitiveness of the pangasius industry in Vietnam on the global market. Through this project, the EU directly supports the entire supply chain from hatcheries, feed manufacturers and processors in Vietnam to EU traders and end-consumers, in which, EU is the largest market for exports of tra and basa from Vietnam.

The Model Farm is jointly established by HUST (VNCPC) and CTU (Department of Fisheries) in the campus of CTU with the aims of implementing training and research activities as well as technology transfer in the Mekong Delta Area in the framework of the SUPA, towards building the conditions for the provision of services regarding science and technology under the self-control mechanism after the project completes.

In the framework of SUPA, HUST and CTU have jointly conducted researches and developed some advanced technologies which have been applied for the entire pangasius supply chain in Vietnam; enhanced dissemination of research’s results, replicated the application of the Model Farm to the local Mekong Delta region and provided scientific and technical services to sustain the development of pangasius supply chain. The Department of Fisheries – CTU and VNCPC – HUST also coordinated to support undergraduate & graduate students and fellows to conduct research on the farms, processing SMEs or pangasius hatcheries in the area.

It is expected that by the completion of the SUPA project, at least 70 per cent of the targeted middle to large Pangasius producing and processing enterprises, together with 30 per cent of the feed producers and small independent production SMEs will be actively engaged in Resources Efficiency and Cleaner Production (RE-CP), and at least 50 per cent of targeted processing SMEs will be provided with sustainable products compliant with the ASC standard to EU and other markets.

Hanoi University of Science and Technology celebrated 60th Anniversary

On October 15th 2016, at C2 Great Hall, Hanoi University of Science and Technology (HUST) solemnly organized its 60th Anniversary (1956 – 2016) and honorably received the Ho Chi Minh Order for the second time.

Attending the Ceremony were the President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, governmental officers, leaders from domestic organizations, and representatives from various international universities, companies, governmental organizations and networks. Speaking at the ceremony, State President Tran Dai Quang recognized the university’s efforts in improving quality of education and training, and extolled its pioneering role in research and technology transfer. On the fundamental and comprehensive educational reform, HUST also took the leadbya wide range of renovations related to education management, developing teaching staff, designing curriculum and training activities which are in line with the requirements of the process of industrialization, modernization and international integration of Vietnam. For those great achievements and contributions in Education, Research and Technology Transfer, HUST was honored to receive the Ho Chi Minh Order for the second time.

During 60 years of foundation and developmentof HUST, the university has trained over 180,000 technical experts, including over 13,000 masters and 800 doctors. HUST now has 1,950 staffs including 1,200 lecturers and has 122 undergraduate and post-graduate training programs.

One day prior to the Ceremony, HUST had hosted its 60th Anniversary Gala dinner at Melia Hotel Hanoi to express the gratitude and appreciation for partner’s valuable support and cooperation. During Gala dinner, HUST had granted “the Recognition Award for Outstanding Contribution” to one organization and eleven professors and experts, who had been significantly dedicating to HUST’s development. HUST President, Prof. Hoang Minh Son asserted that it was the international cooperation and precious support from partners that laid a firm base to bring HUST towards the International Training and Research Standard.

The 60th Founding Anniversary of Hanoi University of Science and Technology marks the process of the establishment and development of the University over more than a half century with vitally important progress in research and training. In the upcoming time, the management board and all staff of HUST determine to make the university an attractive address for industrial investors, a lifelong home for excellent staffs and a cradle for students to pursue knowledge while enjoying excellent academic atmosphere and recognized qualifications.

Seminar on Promoting University Advancement Through Internationalization and University – Industry Linkage hosted by HUST

Within the framework of the 60th Founding Anniversary of Hanoi University of Science and Technology (HUST), the University – Industry Linkage Seminar with the theme “Promoting University Advancement Through Internationalization and University – Industry Linkage” has be jointly organized by Hanoi University of Science and Technology, Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology and the AUN/SEED-net Project on October 14th, 2016 at HUST campus.

  • Presentation Sessions with keynotes from Government and International Organization (MOST, ANU/Seed-Net); Key-notes from Universities (HUST, HCMUT, NUT) and Industrial Representatives (Nissan Techno Vietnam, GE Vietnam, Rikkeisoft)
  • Plenary Discussion on how to promote the U-I Linkage and experience sharing.
  • Exhibition of U-I cooperation results.
  • Company visit to Rikkeisoft Co., Ltd which is managed by a group of 5 alumni students of HUST.

Addressing at the Seminar, Assoc.Prof.Dr. Huynh Quyet Thang – Vice Director of the HUST said that “As a member of the ASEAN nations, Vietnam will face both opportunities for growth and challenges when the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) was established by the year end of 2015. A competitive economy will force Vietnamese enterprises as well as Foreign invested companies located in Vietnam to expand the quality of their products, capital resources and management capacity as well as attracting high-qualified human resources. Whereas universities face to the pressing demand of the national economy in training high-qualified human resources  ready for the labour market, carried out both fundamental & industry oriented researches as well as transfer technology to the industry.  How university and industry can meet the demand and get benefited from each other. U-I linkage and its aspects are more than a priority but a development strategy at HUST and is the reason for all of us gathering here today”.

U-I seminar is the forum to introduce government policies on promote University –Industry connection, to express the needs from industry and to showcase the capability of university towards U-I collaboration.
